Hi everyone. I’am writing this KB’s up, as I didnt seen it yet on Microsoft. So if you land there for that error, enjoy the workaround. (This bug appeared to me on a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with Terminal Service activated)
Introduction
You install Office 2016 on a computer and only Word 2016 give you an error when you try to open it.
As a local admin you don’t see the error.
Symptom
You receive the error : “We’re sorry but this feature appears to be broken and needs to be repaired. Use the Programs and Features option in the Windows Control Panel to repair Microsoft Office.” when you try to open Word 2016.
Other Office 2016’s product are not affected.
Resolution
Word 2016 do a file check on the C:\, if the user launching Word 2016 does not have Read Access to the C:\ Word 2016 give the error.
This happen if the default right got changed. The setting must be like that:

This wasn’t my problem. Word (Office 365, installed April 2018) always started with this message. I went through all the steps on the official MS help page, and just like others who were reporting on that page, no help at all. Note that after the error, Word appears to start and run okay, although I’ve only been doing light work in it.
I’d also had LibreOffice and WPS office on the same computer, prior to installing 365. So, I uninstalled them both, and magically, Word now starts without the error. Clearly one or both of these programs were causing a problem when Word started, which Microsoft’s installers and fixers couldn’t detect or address.

Dude you are awesome for sharing this. This was the second search result under google for “word 2016 we’re sorry… broken”… .I was so frustrated by the unhelpful answers from #Microsoft and hope your answer somehow reaches them as a potential fix/ resolution that can be added to all those locked threads no one can reply to. Thanks again!!!!

Had the same problem “feature appears to be broken…blah, blah, blah….. But only on Word. Excel, etc., opened fine. MS support worked & worked. Finally did a reinstall (after I already tried that) and said they would call back after reinstall. After reinstall, still had the problem. They called back and said it would be 4 hours before a L2 tech could call me. in the meantime I found this thread and uninstalled WPS. Now it works perfectly. Interesting how I was able to t/shoot, research, and correct the problem but the Microsoft expert couldn’t.

If u have WPS this may be that cause a conflict . no need to uninstall it .
Firstly ,
search for wps
click at wps office configuration tools
a window will open >> wps office “general repair / configuration tools”
select “advance” button
another window will open >> compat setting
uncheck compatible with 3rd party >> uncheck all except pdf
click OK …walla . refresh desktop . open up words again . it works for me.
Try it
